OSHA wouldn’t come into being until President Nixon signed the Occupational Health and Safety Act in 1971. Five workers died constructing the Empire State Building in 1930-1931.

Those guys have my utmost respect. Now I’m not sure if they just had enormous balls, or were just that crazy, but you don’t disrespect either type of person.
Seriously, I couldn’t imagine doing anything like that.

Only 5 deaths sounds miraculous.
related: wonder how often workers would “make it rain” below?

And here we have the inventor of Jorts. Hate this man all you want but, his creation eventually lead to Daisy Dukes. I believe we can all be thankful for that.

So big, he needs a crane to help him lift them.
Also, I’m surprised it was only 5.

And that’s also why we dont build massive structures like that in just 12 months anymore.

NOPE NOPE NOPE. I must be tethered to something if climbing stuff.
I got my fulfillment of such work in the past by picking extremely bulky Audi/VW doors/hoods/exhaust bits from the top levels of 30+ ft rack shelving. Being tethered to a swaying order picker truck at max extension is more than enough.

Old construction photos are awesome. Have one of workers checking the cable diameter during construction of the Mackinac Bridge . It was constructed over four summers starting in May of 1954 and resulted in the deaths of five workers.

Having attended MTU in Houghton, MI I have driven across that bridge many times, usually in the winter. Once it was so windy that you could see the vertical cables vibrating back and forth. They closed it to traffic shortly after we made it across.

The construction of the 17-mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is equally harrowing. Seven workers lost their life building that span.

Probably pretty regularly. Hell, my friend showed up on the construction site of his townhouse to find the workers pissing on the plywood floors upstairs. Needless to say, he made them rip out the plywood and replace it. No word on what the workers did after he left.

Yeah, my wife’s uncle builds McMansions... the things the workers do in the unfinished houses is pretty gross. Like peeing in the sump and Pringles can full of feces levels of gross.
